Guard sweeps at 2020 ‘All Army’ Championships

by Maj. Theresa Austin, National Guard Marksmanship Training Center

Amid the ever-changing situation of COVID-19, the 2020 U.S. Army Small Arms Championships were still conducted. As usual, the U.S. National Guard was most victorious winning first place in the 10 categories in which they participated. Also, winning the High-Novice Excellence in Competition aggregate-champion.

The Guard earned 22 of the 30 possible top-three places for each category. The 10 categories included individual and team with rifle, pistol, multigun and overall aggregate champions, as well as novice and open class overall aggregate champions.

The U.S. Army Small Arms Championships commonly referred to as the ‘All Army’ was completed in its entirety at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was comprised of 220 participants from across all four U.S. Army components; Active duty Army, U.S. National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves and U.S. Army Cadet Command, as well as a few U.S. Air National Guardsmen, since the Army and Air National Guard serve together.

According to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, the competitors used both rifle and pistol during the matches, and the courses of fire varied each day. Some matches required combat gear while others were fired “slick,” or no combat gear.

The AMU hosted this weeklong, live-fire training event with the goal of increasing marksmanship skills on both the primary and secondary weapons. It, also, serves as a force multiplier, the participants return to their units to share their knowledge gained during this shoulder to shoulder competition.

It is for these reasons that the Guard participates in military and civilian marksmanship competitions across the nation, which clearly demonstrate its success in the Guard judging from numerous wins during this championship each year.
